The Busitema Journal of Health Sciences (BJHS), published by Busitema University, serves as a premier platform for advancing knowledge in medical and health-related fields. The journal promotes research that improves healthcare outcomes and community well-being, in alignment with Busitema University's commitment to health innovation and impact-driven research.

BJHS is dedicated to:

Aims and Scope

BJHS is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing knowledge across all areas of health sciences and public health through the publication of high-quality research and scholarly work. The journal serves as a platform for public health professionals, researchers, academics, and policymakers to share innovative findings, evidence-based practices, and emerging trends that contribute to strengthening healthcare systems and improving population health outcomes at local, regional, and global levels.

BJHS prioritises content that addresses contemporary issues in health sciences and public health with clear relevance to practice, policy, and health systems.

BJHS welcomes submissions from the following health science disciplines:

Biomedical and Basic Health Sciences

Anatomy, histology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, and other foundational biomedical sciences that support clinical and translational research.

Clinical Medicine and Surgery

Internal medicine, surgery, diagnostics, therapeutics, clinical decision-making, patient management, and evidence-based clinical practice.

Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Health

Maternal health, safe motherhood, reproductive health, adolescent health, neonatal care, fertility, and perinatal outcomes.

Nursing and Midwifery Sciences

Nursing practice, midwifery care, community nursing, patient safety, clinical education, and quality of healthcare delivery.

Community and Public Health

Epidemiology, disease surveillance, health promotion, primary healthcare, environmental and occupational health, outbreak response, and community-based interventions.

Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases

Infectious disease control and research, immunology, antimicrobial resistance, parasitology, virology, and emerging infectious diseases.

Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Clinical pharmacology, drug safety, rational medicine use, toxicology, antimicrobial stewardship, and integration of traditional and modern therapeutics.

Paediatrics and Child Health

Child survival, neonatal health, nutrition, infectious diseases in children, developmental health, and adolescent health services.

Natural Products Research and Innovation

Medicinal plants, ethnopharmacology, bioactive compounds, drug discovery and development, traditional medicine validation, phytochemistry, and development of natural product–based health innovations and therapeutics.

BJHS particularly targets stakeholders interested in public health, maternal and child health, nutrition, healthcare management, community health, natural products research, and healthcare innovation.

Open Access Policy and Licensing

All articles published in BJHS are open access, meaning they are freely available to read, download, copy, distribute, and reuse—with proper attribution—under the terms of the applicable Creative Commons license. Authors retain copyright while granting the public the right to use their work following the chosen license.

Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY): BJHS primarily uses the CC BY 4.0 license, which permits the broadest possible reuse while ensuring authors receive proper credit. Under this license, users may:

·        Distribute, copy, and share the article in any medium or format

·        Create adaptations, including translations, extracts, and derivative works

·        Text/data mine the article for computational analysis

·        Use the work commercially, provided proper attribution is given

Conditions for reuse under CC BY:

✔ Attribution – Users must credit the author(s), link to the original publication (via DOI), and indicate if changes were made.

✔ No endorsement misrepresentation – Adaptations must not imply that the authors endorse the modified work.

✔ No reputational harm – Modifications should not distort the original work in a way that harms the authors' reputation.

Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND): For authors who prefer more restrictive terms, JHS also offers the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, which allows:

·        Non-commercial redistribution (e.g., academic sharing, institutional repositories)

·        Inclusion in collective works (e.g., conference proceedings, anthologies)

Restrictions under CC BY-NC-ND:

✖ No commercial use – The article cannot be used for monetary gain without permission.

✖ No derivatives – Users may not remix, transform, or build upon the material.

Authors may choose this license if required by their funding agency or institutional policy.

Article Publishing Charge (APC)

Unlike many open-access journals, JHS does not charge any Article Processing Charges (APCs). Publication costs are supported by Busitema University, ensuring that authors can publish their work free of charge while maintaining high editorial and peer-review standards. This model promotes inclusivity, allowing researchers from all economic backgrounds to contribute to and benefit from open science.

By publishing in BJHS, authors ensure their work reaches a global audience without financial barriers, promoting evidence-based healthcare, advancing health innovation, and strengthening knowledge exchange in health sciences and healthcare systems.

Submission Guidelines

Manuscript Submission: Authors are invited to submit their manuscripts online via the BJHS submission portal.

Manuscript Preparation: Submissions should follow the journal's formatting guidelines, available on the journal website. All manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Peer Review: All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure quality, validity, and significance.

Language: Manuscripts should be written in clear and concise English.
